The owner of the Titanic had advertised it as an unsinkable ship, and this statement could not be called absolutely baseless. It was designed to float with two of the sixteen watertight compartments flooded, and it was hard to imagine the damage that would actually sink it. An iceberg punched multiple small holes in the hull and the ship sank in less than two hours, leaving 711 survivors out of the 2224 people on board.
