USS Lexington (CV-2) was originally designated CC-1 and was authorized to be completed as an aircraft carrier in July 1922 and commissioned in December 1927. On December 7, 1941 Lexington was based at Pearl Harbor when word of the Japanese attack was received, She immediately launched search planes to hunt for the Japanese fleet. On May 7, 1942 Lexington’s air group sank the Japanese light carrier Shoho but on the 8th she was hit by two torpedoes and three bombs, finally rolling over on her side and sinking. Lexington received two battle stars for her World War II service.
