The Varyag was built in an American shipyard for the Russian Empire. Its main armament consisted of twelve 152mm guns and no shields. It was put into service with the Russian fleet in 1901. During the battle of Chemulpo against the Japanese it fought heroically and was intentionally flooded by the crew to avoid surrender.
