The Tu-22M3 ‘Backfire’ was the latest version of the Tu-22M family. It was equipped with two NK-25 engines, replacing the original NK-22s and making the aircraft capable of Mach 1 at low level and a max speed of Mach 2.05. Also the maximum wing sweep was increased to 65 degrees. The Tu-22M3 was armed with a new Kh-22. No Tu-22M Backfires were exported. Russia was the biggest operator of the type. The Ukraine was the only other operator, having inherited a large number from the Soviet Union. All of them were scrapped in 2005.
