Kenya, Uganda, and Tanzania form a diverse East African region stretching from the Indian Ocean coast to Lake Victoria and the Great Rift Valley. Their communities speak many languages, with Swahili serving as an important regional link, while climates range from tropical coastal heat to cooler highlands. Each country followed its own path to independence, and Tanzania emerged from the union of Tanganyika and Zanzibar in 1964. Figures such as Jomo Kenyatta, Julius Nyerere, and Ugandan writer Okot p’Bitek helped shape the region’s political and cultural identity.
