Equatorial Guinea
Equatorial Guinea is composed of two provinces: the island of Fernando Po, named after the first European visitor, Fernando Po, in 1469, and including the smaller island Annonbon; and the mainland province Rio Muni, sandwiched between Gabon and Cameroon. Fernao do Po, whose highest point is Pico de Santa IsaJb^l (9350 ft.), has rich volcanic soil supporting large area of cocoa plantations. It was ceded to the Spanish by the Portuguese in 1778, and used in the early 19th century as a British base in the fight against African slavers.
