The low demand for the coin and the shortage of silver contributed to the melt down of 270,232,722 silver coins in 1918. Morgan dollars are made of 90% silver and 10% copper. They measure 38.1 mm in diameter, and each weighs 26.73 grams. Morgan dollars were coined at the Philadelphia, New Orleans, Denver, Carson City and San Francisco Mints.
