At the beginning of WWII the Wehrmacht was equipped with 11,200 anti-tank guns. The PAK-36 could effectively fight against light tanks, but it couldn't penetrate medium tanks such as the British Matilda, the Russian T-34, and KV's. This resulted in the nickname 'doorknocker'. It was used on all fronts during WWII.
