Emil Zátopek Czech long-distance runner won the 5000m, 10000m, and marathon earning him 3 gold medals. 
Lis Hartel a Danish equestrian who was paralyzed from the knees below from polio won a silver medal in equestrian dressage. 
- American Bil Havens had to miss the Olympics because his wife was expecting their first child. Twenty eight years later, his son Frank Havens competed in the Olympics and won the 10,000 m canoeing event.
