Marching Toward Peace: The Birth of the Peace Corps!
The Peace Corps is an independent agency of the United States government, founded by an executive order from President John F. Kennedy in March 1961. Its establishment aimed to provide assistance to developing countries by deploying American volunteers equipped with skills in various fields such as education, health, entrepreneurship, women's empowerment, and community development.
The primary goal is to aid communities in partner countries by offering practical support through skilled American citizens, generally with college degrees. Volunteers undergo three months of technical training before serving a minimum of two years in their assigned host countries. They are also encouraged to immerse themselves in the local culture, learn the language, and adapt to the communities they serve.
Initially, the Peace Corps deployed 900 volunteers to 16 countries during its first year. The momentum peaked in 1966 with 15,556 volunteers operating across 52 countries. However, after budgetary cuts in 1989, participation declined significantly to around 5,100 volunteers. The agency experienced a resurgence in the 21st century, bolstered by increased funding and public interest—by its 50th anniversary in 2011, over 8,500 volunteers were active in 77 countries.
Over the years, the Peace Corps has seen more than 240,000 Americans serve in its mission across 142 countries. This unique program not only impacts the countries that host volunteers but also fosters cultural exchange and enhances global understanding.
