On the morning of December 7, 1941, the world changed forever. The Imperial Japanese Navy launched a devastating surprise attack on the U.S. naval base at Pearl Harbor, Hawaii, shattering American isolationism and plunging the nation into World War II.
This video is a solemn tribute to the more than 2,400 Americans who lost their lives on that fateful day, and a look at how philately (stamp collecting) serves as a lasting memorial to their sacrifice.
In this commemorative feature, we explore:
- The USS Arizona Memorial: We look at stamps that feature the iconic memorial in Pearl Harbor, a permanent resting place for many of the ship's crew.
- The World War II Series: Stamps issued by postal offices to mark the 50th, 60th, and 75th anniversaries of the war, often featuring designs that reference the attack or the ensuing conflict.
- Home Front Mobilization: How early WWII-era stamps reflect the immediate national shift and call to action that followed the attack.
- Honoring the Heroes: Stamps dedicated to the servicemen and women—the sailors, airmen, and Marines—whose heroism defined that "Day of Infamy."
Join us in remembering the courage, sacrifice, and resilience of a nation on one of the most significant days in American history.
