On September 19, the United Nations Postal Administration (UNPA) will celebrate the International Day of Peace by issuing a set of three embroidered stamps in collaboration with the Universal Postal Union (UPU) and ten other postal organizations. This issue, titled "One Stitch at a Time," aims to promote the value of peace globally. Each stamp features an embroidered white dove carrying an olive branch, symbolizing unity and a message that transcends borders and ideologies.
The stamps are issued for each United Nations post office, with denominations of $6 for New York City, 6 francs for Geneva, and €5 for Vienna. The production of these unique stamps was handled by the Austrian embroidery company Hammerle & Vogel, with creative direction from Iris Hammerle. This initiative not only highlights the artistic aspect of stamp collecting but also serves as a reminder of the global commitment to peace.
The International Day of Peace was established by the United Nations General Assembly in 1981 and is observed annually on September 21. Each year, a new theme focuses on various aspects of peace, and the UN encourages participation from governments and individuals worldwide through events and educational campaigns. The September 19 stamps, measuring 55mm by 42mm, were produced in limited quantities, making them a valuable addition for collectors.
