Jersey Post Celebrates Shipbuilding History with New Stamp Issue
Jersey Post is set to release a collection of six stamps on August 15, celebrating the rich history of shipbuilding on the island. Designed by renowned stamp engraver Martin Mörck, each stamp features intricate line drawings that depict significant people, places, and ships that contributed to Jersey's shipbuilding industry. The stamps highlight the island's strategic position with multiple harbors and a favorable no-taxation policy, making it a vital hub for shipbuilding during the 19th century.
The stamp collection includes a £1.20 stamp honoring shipyard owner Daniel Le Vesconte, a £1.90 stamp showcasing various shipyard locations, and a £2.30 stamp featuring the shipyard in Gorey. Additionally, three stamps capture iconic ships built in Jersey: the Elisha Tupper (80 pence), Matilda Wattenbach (£1.35), and Percy Douglas (£3). Each stamp measures 30mm by 40mm and has been printed using four-color offset lithography by bpost in Belgium.
Collectors will appreciate the craftsmanship of Martin Mörck, who not only designs stamps but also has a passion for building boats. His craftsmanship is reflected in the stamps, which echo the sentiment of his father: "Only two things in the world have to be created in perfect harmony, music and ships."
