Canada Post Issues Fungi Stamp Collection
On August 27, Canada Post introduced a set of five nondenominated stamps that celebrate the beauty and ecological significance of fungi in Canadian ecosystems. Each stamp, priced at the current domestic letter rate of $1.24, features a different species of fungus, including the star-tipped reindeer lichen, oyster mushroom, chicken of the woods, tinder fungus, and the mycorrhizal fungus. The designs draw inspiration from traditional botanical illustrations, making them appealing to both nature lovers and stamp collectors.
In their press release, Canada Post emphasized the vital roles fungi play in the environment, such as decomposing organic matter, storing carbon, and breaking down pollutants. Additionally, many Indigenous cultures have historically utilized fungi for medicinal and nutritional purposes. The stamps highlight not only the aesthetic appeal of these organisms but also their ecological importance, thereby fostering a greater appreciation for biodiversity.
The stamps were printed in a limited run of 120,000 booklets, with 5,000 official first-day covers (FDC) produced, adding to their collectability. The FDC is canceled in Punnichy, Saskatchewan, near a known source of tinder fungus. Collectors can purchase these stamps and related items through the Canada Post website or via mail order.
