Canada Post celebrated the Festival of Lights, Diwali, by issuing a new stamp on October 15. This year, the five-day festival begins on October 18 and culminates on the main day of Diwali, October 20. The stamp, which is permanent-rate and currently valued at $1.24, is available in booklets of six. However, due to U.S. Customs changes, customers in the United States cannot purchase these stamps at this time.
The stamp features the word "Diwali" in Hindi and English, along with a depiction of traditional rangoli art. Rangoli is a temporary decoration made of various materials, often created by women and passed down through generations. The design also holds cultural significance, symbolizing the welcoming of Lakshmi, the goddess of wealth and prosperity, with special offerings and festive gatherings during Diwali.
This marks the seventh Diwali stamp issued by Canada Post, with previous ones dating back to 2017. The current stamp was designed by Ritu Kanal, who shared her childhood experiences of creating rangoli art for the festival. Additionally, an official first-day cover enhances the stamp's appeal, featuring a larger rangoli design and a postmark depicting a lotus flower, making it a noteworthy item for collectors.
