In late October, Linn’s Stamp News reported a newly assigned plate number, P2222, for the United States Holiday Cheer stamps (Scott 6033-6036), which were issued on September 13 in double-sided panes of 20. Initially, the printer Ashton Potter from Williamsville, N.Y., utilized plate number P1111 to produce a staggering 500 million stamps, ultimately arranged into 25 million collectible panes for sale across authorized post offices and various retail outlets.
According to Albert Ruiz, a senior public relations representative for the U.S. Postal Service, the change in plate numbers from P1111 to P2222 is linked to a modification in the paper used for printing. On November 4, Ruiz clarified that this adjustment arises from a change in the size of the paper roll employed during the printing process, emphasizing the importance of such details to stamp collectors.
This information is crucial for stamp collectors, as changes in plate numbers can affect the value and collectibility of stamps. Collectors should pay close attention to these updates to stay informed about potential variations in their collections.
